Rome is the capital of Christianity, home of the Pope, that is also its bishop. But before becoming even \u201conly\u201d bishop of the Eternal City, the Pope was its \u201cKing\u201d, for more than 1000 years, starting from 752 A.D, with the constitution of the Papal States, to end with the Capture of Rome in 1870 ( The famous Porta Pia Breach, 2 minutes away from our Hotel Alpi).<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"background: white; margin: 0cm 0cm 7.5pt;\"><span style=\"font-size: 14.5pt; font-family: Helvetica; color: #333333;\"><strong>Over a millennium of traditions<\/strong>, strongly shaped by Christianism\/Catholicism, are nowadays deeply-rooted in the social life of people in Rome, connecting them with the city even more. Christmas is one of these traditions, and along the centuries Christmas Eve hasn\u2019t stopped from being a fundamental family event for Romans. Naturally the feast was celebrated having dinner with all the family, with a special menu, still existing today, starting from the top element of Christmas Eve: fish. The 24<sup>th<\/sup> December in Rome, normal meat that is not fish is not eaten, tradition that today is still vivid with the hard to understand way of saying for the rest of Italy, <strong>\u201cFare Vigilia\u201d<\/strong>, meaning to avoid these kind of food in this date.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><em>To say the truth, the ban on \u201cmeat\u201d has origin in the catholic traditions and concerned all the Fridays and Christmas Eve, a penitence act. This prohibition was smartly bypassed introducing the fish meat in the menu.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>But what were they used to eat (and what are we still used to ) during Christmas Eve dinner? Let\u2019s go in order.<\/p>\n<p>It was tradition to start the morning of the 24<sup>th<\/sup> December with the <strong>\u201cCottio\u201d<\/strong>, that is nothing but the fresh fish auction that was held at <strong>Portico D\u2019Ottavia<\/strong>, the Jewish Ghetto of the city. The auction begun at down, and was a kind of feast where restaurateurs, wealthy roman families and storekeepers were used to go to buy the raw materials for their dinners. Afterwards, the Cottio was moved, in order to preserve the monuments, arriving at the Mercati Generali of Via Ostiense, where the tradition lasted up to few decades ago.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.hotelalpi.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/04\/Ghetto_venditori-dipesce.jpg\" data-lbwps-width=\"641\" data-lbwps-height=\"501\" data-lbwps-srcsmall=\"https:\/\/www.hotelalpi.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/04\/Ghetto_venditori-dipesce-300x234.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"img-responsive\" src=\"https:\/\/www.hotelalpi.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/04\/Ghetto_venditori-dipesce.jpg\" alt=\"Natale a Roma\"><\/a><\/p>\n<p style=\"background: white; margin: 0cm 0cm 7.5pt 0cm;\"><strong><span style=\"font-size: 14.5pt; font-family: Helvetica; color: #333333;\">First in the evening were the starters: olives, marinated fish and Comacchio\u2019s eels. <\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.hotelalpi.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/04\/anguilla_marinata_large.jpg\" data-lbwps-width=\"1000\" data-lbwps-height=\"856\" data-lbwps-srcsmall=\"https:\/\/www.hotelalpi.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/04\/anguilla_marinata_large-300x257.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"img-responsive wp-image-2966\" src=\"https:\/\/www.hotelalpi.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/04\/anguilla_marinata_large.jpg\" alt=\"anguilla_marinata_large\" width=\"1000\" height=\"856\"><\/a><\/p>\n<p style=\"background: white; margin: 0cm 0cm 7.5pt 0cm;\"><span style=\"font-size: 14.5pt; font-family: Helvetica; color: #333333;\">After that, a typical dish from the roman tradition, <strong>Pasta with Tuna ( or with Arzilla\u2019s broth or spaghetti with clams).<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p>To continue, there was salted codfish with pine nuts and <strong>Zibibbo<\/strong>, together with fried artichokes, broccoli and pippin apples, all exclusively in batter.<\/p>\n<p>To follow, there was the traditional roman desserts, the torrone and the <strong>PanGiallo<\/strong>.<br \/>\n<a href=\"https:\/\/www.hotelalpi.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/04\/Pangiallo-2.jpg\" data-lbwps-width=\"700\" data-lbwps-height=\"500\" data-lbwps-srcsmall=\"https:\/\/www.hotelalpi.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/04\/Pangiallo-2-300x214.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"img-responsive wp-image-2968\" src=\"https:\/\/www.hotelalpi.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/04\/Pangiallo-2.jpg\" alt=\"Pangiallo_romano\" width=\"700\" height=\"500\"><\/a><\/p>\n<p>An interesting menu to be, for the catholic tradition, \u201cla cena di magro\u201d ( the slim dinner).<\/p>\n<p>After dinner everybody was going to Mass, to celebrate the advent of Christ, particularly important the mass held in <strong>Santa Maria Maggiore<\/strong>,&nbsp; few steps away from our Hotel Alpi. Naturally, the most prestigious dinners were in the noble houses, wealthy families\u2026 and the clergy, how Giuseppe Gioacchino Belli says in this poem:<\/p>\n<p><em>Ustacchio, la viggija de Natale<\/em><br \/>\n<em> tu mmettete de guardia sur portone<\/em><br \/>\n<em> de quarche mmonziggnore o ccardinale,<\/em><br \/>\n<em> e vvederai entr\u00e0 sta priscissione.<\/em><br \/>\n<em> Mo entra una cassetta de torrone,<\/em><br \/>\n<em> mo entra un barilozzo de caviale,<\/em><br \/>\n<em> mo er porco, mo er pollastro, mo er cappone,<\/em><br \/>\n<em> e mmo er fiasco de vino padronale.<\/em><br \/>\n<em> Poi entra er gallinaccio, poi l\u2019abbacchio,<\/em><br \/>\n<em> l\u2019oliva dorce, er pesce de Fojjano,<\/em><br \/>\n<em> l\u2019ojjo, er tonno, e l\u2019inguilla de Comacchio.<\/em><br \/>\n<em> Inzomma, inzino a nnotte, a mmano a mmano,<\/em><br \/>\n<em> tu ll\u00ed tt\u2019accorgerai, padron Ustacchio,<\/em><br \/>\n<em> cuant\u2019\u00e8 ddivoto er popolo romano.<\/em><br \/>\n<em> G.Belli<br \/>\n<\/em><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14.5pt; font-family: Helvetica; color: #333333;\">And presents? Presents in Rome were exchanged the 6<sup>th<\/sup> January, on the Epiphany, or as we say in Italy \u201cLa Befana\u201d. The custom of gifts coming from Santa Claus begun after the Second World War, coming from other countries\u2019 traditions. The 6<sup>th<\/sup> of January, day of Epiphany ( from the greek \u1f10\u03c0\u03b9\u03c6\u03b1\u03af\u03bd\u03c9, I show myself), is the day when traditionally the Wise Men reached the newborn Jesus, to give him as gifts, gold, incense and myrrh. The word \u201cBefana\u201d is nothing but the slang of the dialectal word of \u201cepiphany\u201d. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><em>\u201cOltre a li ggiocarelli, a questi, s\u2019a\u00f9sa a ffaje trov\u00e0 a ppennolone a la cappa der camino du\u2019 carzette, una piena de pastarelle, di fichi secchi, mosciar\u00e8lle, e un portogallo e \u2018na pigna indorati e inargentati; e un\u2019antra carz\u00e9tta piena de cennere e ccarbone pe\u2019 tutte le vorte che sso\u2019 stati cattivi\u201d &#8211; Giggi Zanazzo<\/em><br \/>\n<em> (Oltre ai giochini, per i bimbi, si usa lasciare appesi alla cappa del camino due Calze, una piena di paste, fichi secchi, castagne essiccate, un cavallino e una pigna dorati e argentati; E un\u2019alta calza contenente cenere e carbone per tutte le volte che sono stati cattivi).<\/em><\/p>\n<p>It was said that the Befana was used to live in a small alley nearby Piazza Sant\u2019Eustachio, between the Pantheon and Piazza Navona, where some parties where held at the time of Ephiphany. There were shops selling various merchandise and sweets.
